For many different reasons, more and more people these days are in some sort of long term relationship. With many young people moving away from home to go to college, it is often the case that this age group are the ones in long term relationships.
There is a lot of debate about whether or not long term relationships can actually work. My personal opinion is that the vast majority do not work.
For the following example I will use a young male who was living at home with his parents. He spent a lot of time with his girlfriend before moving away to college, this is a classic long distance relationship. He will go off to college and they would decide that they will just see each other at events like holidays.
Sadly though college provides too much of a temptation for males and they are likely to cheat. It will be very difficult for them to resist temptation what with all the parties and alcohol flowing around.
It is normally the case that if a man thinks that he can get away with being unfaithful, then he probably will be, and a long term relationship is the perfect setting for this. Being in a long term relationship means that the chances of you discovering that your partner is cheating are low.
Due to the separation, long term relationships can also result in the two of you growing apart. Spending time away from you partner will meant that you both make new friends and get used to being without each other.
The only time when a long distance relationship can work is if there’s light at the end of the tunnel and it won’t be long distance for too long. It is most probably not going to work if you are going to be apart for several years.
I would therefore consider everything before you get back into a long distance relationship that has already broken up once. Don’t just get back with your ex because you’re scared of moving on because while they’re away you’re practically alone anyway.
